Should he go?

Proclaim this among the Gentiles (Joel 3:9)
In our home group we are reading Galatians, so the phrase 'proclaim this among the Gentiles' has a significance of which the author is not aware. We now know that God does want his message proclaimed outside the people of Israel, but it is a message of peace not war. Paul is called to proclaim God's offer of reconciliation through his Son, Jesus: peace with God and peace with all people. Where Joel saw division, we see unity.
As I read today's news about Dominic Cummings, I am reminded of this human instinct to divide. The division that Mr Cummings is accused of is a moral one. It seems he fell to the common human failing of making an exception of himself. I recognise the desire to see him removed from office. In my mind he has done nothing but harm since Boris Johnson started working with him. But I am loathe to join the call for him to go. No, not because he doesn't deserve to go. He clearly does. He broke his own rules and may have put others' lives at risk. No, I am very unwilling to censor him because I see the same failing everywhere I look, including in the mirror. Making an exception of yourself is the basis of pretty much all moral failure and you and I are certainly no exception. And he didn't do it so he could have a nice safe time in his second home, that much is clear. He did it because he was concerned about the welfare of his family. I would love to be sure that all those clamouring for his removal wouldn't have done exactly the same thing, given means and opportunity, but I am not. So, should he go? Yes. But should he be driven out by a self-righteous clamour from the press? No. You who are without sin, cast the first stone.

  1. Totally agree with you, George. The British press loves to hound people or professions. Add to that, the social media trolls and you have an angry mob shouting, 'Crucify him'. God sees our failings and we have our own conscience to live with.

  2. I totally agree with all that has been said. But he should go of his own volition and examine his conscience. He must know this but will not admit it. We are all guilty at times of expecting others to behave in a way that we do not. But people in high office need to set an example.
